In Peru, A Boeing 737 With 141 Passengers On Board Bursts Into Flames After Landing And Veering Off
[Jauja, Peru] At around 4:30 pm local time at the Francisco Carle Airport in Jauja, Peru, a Peruvian Airlines Boeing 737 (reg. OB-2036) caught fire after landing and veering off of the runway.
The airline stated, "Today, at 16:30 pm, when we landed at Francisco Carlé de Jauja Airport, our Boeing 737-300 aircraft… turned on the right side, skidding off the runway. The high professionalism of our cabin crew prevented a major incident."
141 passengers were on board at the time of the incident, but none of them have suffered any serious injuries although Le Republica news reported at least 26 people, including a child, had incurred minor injuries.
A passenger, Jessica Núñez, said the pilot of the aircraft reportedly lost control after touchdown when the starboard (right) wing detached.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and assisted with evacuating the passengers. Juan Pavic, the Director of Civil Aeronautics, confirmed that everyone made it off the plane safely.
An investigation is underway into the cause of the fire.
